
Fabiene Rocha has lived and worked in São Paulo for the past 40 years or so. At age 10, fascinated by English, she took the initiative to begin her studies at a local EFL school, soon moving on to União Cultural Brasil-US and finally Cultura Inglesa, where she obtained the Certificates of Proficiency in English from the Cambridge and Michigan Universities. Her ambition was none other than to master the language.
At age 17, she began teaching at EFL schools. Later, just before moving to London, she taught business English to corporate executives in São Paulo and graduated in Industrial Design at FAAP. During her one-year stay in London, Fabiene took a shorthand course at Sight&Sound School, on Tottehnam Court Road, which later proved very useful in the speedy note-taking task that consecutive interpreting requires. Other courses included voice coaching, accent and pronunciation and English literature.
Back in São Paulo, with a diploma from the translation / interpreting program of Alumni obtained in 1989, she embraced the profession with heart and soul. For five years, she was the assistant editor at the International Weekly Edition of then prestigious business newspaper Gazeta Mercantil, where she acquired advanced translation and editing skills in such key areas as politics,finance, IT, agribusiness, the economy and markets.
In 1985, she took an intensive Interpreting Skills Enhancement program at Georgetown University .
In 2001, obtained the Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera – DELE, from the Instituto Miguel de Cervantes in São Paulo, after having graduated from a two-year course in Spaninsh at language school Seven.
She now works as a translator and conference interpreter in Brazil and abroad in areas that range from human and animal nutrition to aviation and mechanical engineering, including Psychology, IT and politics.
Member of the Brazilian Association of Professional Conference Interpreters (APIC) and the American Translators’ Association (ATA), Fabiene celebrated her 20th year of interpreting in 2010.
Now in 2011, Fabiene has delved into French studies to be able to add yet another language to her portfolio of working languages.
